The firm’s dedication to diversity starts at the top. Our dedication is reflected in our commitment of time, talent, and resources, and reinforced by the work of our Diversity Committee. This Committee champions the efforts to develop and advance diversity at all levels within the firm. The mission of the Diversity Committee is to endorse and encourage diversity and inclusion throughout all levels of our Firm through training, education, and example. The Committee is committed to fostering understanding, communication and respect among all people in the firm, including people of different races, religions, ages, genders, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, national origins, sexual preferences or orientations, medical conditions or disabilities, and marital, veteran or family status.

Managing Partners Diversity Collaborative

In addition, the Managing Partners of many of the law firms in Grand Rapids recently concluded that we can accomplish much more together than we can individually and so formed the Managing Partners Diversity Collaborative. We desire to collaborate to bring about change in our organizations and in the Greater Grand Rapids legal community, change that will increase our diversity and ensure that our firms and the Bar Association are open and inclusive. To this end, we agreed to participate in a five-year Action Plan to address three pressing challenges facing our organizations and the Bar Association. We understand that the diversity of thought and backgrounds enriches our firm culture, and helps us to provide outstanding and well- rounded legal services to the clients and community that we serve.

All of our diversity initiatives and policies reflect Smith Haughey’s deep commitment to equality and social justice. A diverse workforce is essential to our ability to provide our clients with the best possible legal services and to create an atmosphere in which all our people thrive. This includes men and women from different nations, cultures, ethnic groups, generations, backgrounds, skills, abilities, and all the other unique differences that make each of us who we are.

While diversity is a business imperative, it is equally important to us as a social imperative. Smith Haughey embraces diversity as fundamental to the promotion of our firm’s values and recognizes that diversity has an invaluable influence on our firm and our communities. We endeavor to promote innovative approaches that enhance the diversity of our staff and attorneys and recognize diversity as essential to fulfilling our principled business goals.
