Governmental Law
We keep it CIVIL
Smith Haughey’s governmental law attorneys provide a broad range of legal services for municipalities, school districts, and governmental agencies throughout Michigan, as well as those who deal with them. With more than 100 years of combined experience, our attorneys possess a thorough grasp of governmental immunity, civil rights, police powers, constitutional rights, the public’s right to know, eminent domain, and the public relations that necessarily accompany the furnishing of public services.
In addition to understanding the legal complexities arising from these issues, we have substantial practical experience in applying them to real-world situations. This enables us to serve clients in a manner that is efficient and cost-effective while withstanding public scrutiny and enhancing public trust.
The broad range of legal services we provide includes defense against claims alleging violation of civil rights, false arrest, excessive force, false imprisonment, and constitutional claims. Select members of our group are former prosecuting attorneys and have first-hand experience in law enforcement.
We also offer in-depth experience and insight in roadway maintenance and design, automobile safety, accident reconstruction, and roadway rights of way. Approximately 75% of the road commissions in Michigan, as well as many municipalities and developers, have relied on us for counsel and the defense of roadway related litigation.
Our services to governmental law clients are further enhanced by our access to Smith Haughey attorneys practicing in the areas of public sector labor and employment law, real estate law, construction law, product liability, and workers’ compensation.
