Quicks to Teach in China

Brenda Jones Quick and Albert T. Quick, both attorneys in the Traverse City office of Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge, have been invited by the Jilin University School of Law, located in Changchun, China, to teach on behalf of The John Marshall Law School (JMLS) of Chicago this fall.

JMLS has a cooperative agreement with the Jilin University law school that allows LL.M. degree options for their graduates. Before being accepted to JMLS, however, they must complete two courses: American Government and Legal English, which the Quicks will be teaching.

Brenda and Al Quick have spent 20 and 30 years, respectively, as law professors. Due to their extensive teaching backgrounds and reputations as exceptional law professors, Patricia Mell, Dean of JMLS, requested Jilin University School of Law to extend an invitation to the Quicks. In order to teach more than 30 days in China, an invitation from the host university is required.

"For many of our students at Jilin University, the Quicks will be the first American lawyers that they have met," Dean Mell said. "As such, any people we send as our representatives must be of the highest caliber. I have known Brenda and Al for over a decade and during that time both have exhibited the highest level of skill as law professors. In addition to being outstanding scholars, they are both consummate practitioners in their respective fields. I feel that they will be marvelous role models for our students."

"The Chinese students have a common goal of being certified to study law in the United States and it will be a very rewarding experience for us to help them attain that goal," Al Quick said.

The Quicks will be teaching at Jilin University from approximately mid-September to mid-October, with a one week break during the first week of October when the university will be closed to celebrate the Chinese Independence Day. During that break, the Quicks plan to travel and see more of the country.

Of the approximately 400 law schools in China, Jilin University is considered the premier law school. It is located about 500 miles northeast of Beijing.
