Smith Haughey Welcomes Attorney Brooke A. Johnston

Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge is pleased to announce that attorney Brooke A. Johnston has joined the firm’s Grand Rapids office. Brooke’s practice focuses on medical malpractice defense litigation. Brooke represents hospitals, nurses and other healthcare providers throughout the state. As a professional, she zealously advocates for her clients by considering both the legal and human implications of the conflict.

Prior to joining Smith Haughey, Brooke practiced as a litigation attorney in the Detroit and Dearborn legal markets, working in both the private and public interest sector. While litigating in the private sector, Brooke represented insurance companies in instances of fraud and coverage priority disputes. While litigating in the public interest sector, Brooke worked on a COVID-19 litigation team that sought to mitigate pandemic-related homelessness. In this role, Brooke successfully secured via negotiation or litigation the continued housing stability of over 100 Michigan households.

Brooke graduated from Aquinas College with a B.A. in communications and marketing, where she was named Aquinas College Woman of the Year, was a Moot Court Team participant and tutor, and served as a Senator in the College’s Student Government. Thereafter, Brooke earned both her J.D. and M.J. from Michigan State University College of Law, where she won the American Bar Association Region Six Negotiation Competition and was a Jurisprudence Achievement Award recipient in both clinic and negotiation.
